Lt. Uhura provides the Enterprise with communications to other vessels. She is also responsible for keeping in touch with away team members on a hostile alien planet. Although she provides communication, she sometimes journeys to away teams as well and was captured, along with Kirk and Chekov, to an alien world, where gladitorial games were played. She also kissed the daring-do hero Captain Kirk.

Lt. Uhura was also responsible for the theft of the Enterprise, but was cleared of the charge, after the Genesis incident to rescue her late comrade, Captain Spock. She also passed Klingonese in order to rescue Captain Kirk and Dr. McCoy from Rura Penthe, as the universal translator would have been recognized. She also saved the President from a certain assassins bullet.
