Lt. Commander Hikaru Sulu provides the steering power for the USS Enterprise. Sulu would also alternate between Scotty in taking over the command, when Captain Kirk went out on away missions and have been his first step in getting his very own command later in the years. Sulu's hobbies include fencing, which he showed to the crew when affected by the Psi 2000 virus. He would also influence the crew on remaining an earth-like planet after being infected by a very powerful spore.

Throughout the years, Sulu has been a loyal aid to Kirk, thus helping him in his plans to rescue his comrade Captain Spock from the planet Genesis. This would cost him his promotion to captain, as he was tried and cleared of the charge, for conspiring with Kirk.

Sulu would, however, get his own command, The Excelsior and would play vital role during the Khitomer conference and save the life of his dear old friend, Captain Kirk and save the President, with the rest of his old Enterprise crew.
