Dr. McCoy is the healer onboard the USS Enterprise. He would heal the wounded if possible and would have an illogical argument with the logical Mr. Spock, trying always to get him to reveal his human emotions. Dr. McCoy is the first doctor to operate a blood transfusion between Vulcan's, when Mr. Spock's fathers life is hanging in the balance, he has no choice but to do a blood transfusion to save his life. He is also responsible for reintegrating Spock's brain, after it was taken out by a sadistic madman.

Even McCoy's knowledge of medicine, couldn't save his father, who died on a hospital bed. The most regretful pain that Sybok, Spock's half brother exposes to his friend. The reason why he became a doctor and tried all he could to save lives. His limited knowledge of Klingon anatomy would also fail to save Chancellor Gorkon, who was trying to unite his people with the Federation, after an explosion decemates their atmosphere on Kronos.

McCoy was also responsible for launching the Enterprise-D on her maiden voyage, as a retired admiral in the twenty-forth century and is currently retired.
