Captain James T. Kirk will forever be linked to the ship, USS Enterprise. Having commanded the ship after Captain Christopher Pike's retirement, Captain Kirk took the ship on a five year voyage to explore strange new worlds. He has been court-martialled several times and disciplined for disobeying direct orders from Starfleet. One most talked about events will be when he disobeyed orders to venture to the Genesis planet to rescue his late comrade Captain Spock. He was court-martialed and lost his Admiralty, but a new starship, the second ship to bear the name Enterprise.

Later, he was court-martialed again, after he was found a suspect in killing Chancellor Gorkon, during a diplomatic mission. His imprisonment in the penal colony, Rura Penthe nearly costed him his life, but was rescued just before the Klingons had the chance to kill him. He was helped by a shapeshifter, but found that it too was involved in this incident trying to get the captain dead.

But his death would soon follow, after he and two legendary members of the Enterprise are guest of honors aboard the Enterprise-B. In this trip, the ship answers a distress call to a stricken vessel, and must assist them. But due to the gravitmetric distortions, the ships suffers heavy damage. Scotty utilizes the idea of using a resonance burst from the main deflector dish, and thus Kirk does the work, but is swept out into space, after a hull breach in the deflector room.
