In space, USS Enterprise, NCC-1701-D and USS Repulse, NCC-2544, an
Excelsior-class vessel, rides along each other, in close proximity. Aboard the USS Enterprise's
Shuttlebay, a shuttlecraft can be seen leaving the Enterprise, and heading for the other vessel.
On the Bridge, Lt Commander Data is working at
Science Station One, while Lt Worf works next to him. A computer voice informs the crew that the
Repulse shuttle has cleared Docking Bay Three. Lt Worf goes to his new station, the Tactical
Station. Commander Riker, who is at conn, orders Lt Worf to open hailing frequencies. Lt Worf
acknowledges and says that hailing frequencies are open. Riker informs the Repulse captain that
they're getting ready to leave. The Repulse captain acknowledges and says that transfer is
complete. He tells them "good luck" on their mission. Commander Riker also gives them luck. The
Repulse captain informs him to give Captain Picard his regards and ends transmission. From his
station, Ensign Wesley Crusher informs the commander that the Shuttlebay is secure. Commander
Riker thanks Mr Crusher and orders him to make preparations to get underway, as he heads for the
Captain's Ready Room.
In the Captain's Ready Room, Captain Picard is
holding a small rectangular object in his hand. A newly promoted Lt Geordi La Forge is also
there, as he tells the captain that they'll construct the enclosure in Cargo Deck Five. Soon,
there is a chime at the door and when Captain Picard answers, Commander Riker enters. As he goes
to his seat, he tells the captain that the transfer is complete and that Dr Pulaski has been
shown to her quarters. He says that they're ready to get underway. Picard says grand and tells
Riker to take a look at the containment module that their new Chief Engineer has designed for
them, as he hands him the rectangular object. As he takes the object, Riker tells Geordi La
Forge that his new position has a nice ring to it.
As Geordi accepts the commander's compliments, he
gets down to business, saying that each of these units will have total environmental control;
from gravity, temperature, atmosphere and light, each held by their protective statis field.
Riker soon asks if these modules will then get put into a larger unit. Geordi acknowledges and
hits a button on Picard's table, bringing up a holographic display of the larger module. Geordi
explains that these smaller units will keep the specimens alive, whilst the larger module will
keep them alive, as shown by the holographic image. As Geordi turns off the image and gets up,
he says that all he has to do now is replicate these at least five hundred and twelve times,
which means that he'll have to divert power from the warp core to the replicators for a while.
Captain Picard asks Geordi, how long will they be
on impulse for. When Geordi answers, at least a couple of hours, both Picard and Riker react, as
Geordi says that it can't be helped. Riker tells Geordi that when they leave 'aucdet Nine, he's
gonna need all the power he can slam into those engines. Geordi says that he'll have it and
leaves. After Geordi leaves, Picard says that he'll relieve Riker at zero-three-zero-zero. Riker
acknowledges and exits as well. On the Bridge, Riker orders Ensign Crusher to set course for
'aucdet Nine. Wesley Crusher informs Riker that the course for 'aucdet Nine has been inputted.
Riker orders Crusher to engage at maximum impulse velocity, which Wesley acknowledges.
As the Enterprise departs for 'aucdet Nine, a small
ball of light follows the Enterprise and enters the ship from the aft... On the Bridge, Lt
Commander Data informs Engineering that he just observed what appeared to be a random energy
transference... From his Engineering station, Geordi asks where and Data replies, aft, outboard
of the port nacelles. Geordi tells Data to stand-by as he goes to check. As Geordi checks, he
tells Data that he doesn't show anything... On the Bridge, Commander Riker goes up to Data and
asks him if there's a problem. Data says possibly and says that he's detected a random power
fluctuations. Riker orders Data to let him know if it shows up again and Data acknowledges.
The ball of light seen earlier has entered the
Enterprise and is exploring the ship. As it heads down a corridor, it comes upon two male
crewmembers talking and the light hides itself. As the crewmembers turn into another corridor,
it follows them for a while, and then vanishes into the ceiling. The crewmembers hears something
for a split second, but finds nothing when they look back... The light then enters the quarters
of a male crewman sleeping and after studying it for a while, it disappears again through the
walls... and enters yet another quarter. After scanning the subject, and making sure it's the
right subject, it begins to slide under the blankets and into the body. As we follow the light
into the body, we soon realize that it is that of Counselor Deanna Troi. As the light embeds
itself into the counselor's body, Counselor Troi wakes up...
------
While the Enterprise is on impulse, en route to 'aucdet Nine, the
Captain's Log indicate that there has been an outbreak of an unclassified plasma plague in the
Rachelis System. He says that they're on an emergency run to collect deadly specimens of the
plague and transport them to Science Station Tango Sierra, where hopefully, an antidote will be
found...
In Cargo Deck Five, Lt La Forge goes up to a
crewman, who is working on the large containment module. Lt La Forge asks him how's it going,
and the crewman replies that they are finished. He adds that they are waiting to insert the
modules...
On the Bridge, Captain Picard exits his Ready Room
and onto the Bridge, where Commander Riker informs him that Lt La Forge has informed him that
they will be able to engage the warp drive within the hour. Picard tells Riker that that's grand
and tells Data, who is at the Science Station, that once they receive all the specimens they
will be carrying, he wants Data and Dr, Dr, as Picard struggles to remember the doctor's name.
Data answers it for him and says Dr Pulaski. Picard orders him and Dr Pulaski to go through the
specimen. Data acquiesces.
After that, Picard and Riker take their seat, and
Picard asks Riker if the doctor has reported in yet. When Riker says not yet, Picard contacts
Sickbay. When a male crewmember responds, Captain Picard asks the crewmember where Dr Pulaski
is. The crewmember answers that Dr Pulaski is in Ten-Forward, which leaves Picard less than
amused. The captain thanks the crewmember and looks at Riker. He says that she's only been here
a few hours and she's already found Ten-Forward. Then, Riker says that he'll get her, but Picard
stops him and says that he'll go. Picard goes to the Turbolift as Riker looks after him. From
his station, Lt Worf simply says, "not the best way to meet your new captain." Riker simply
looks at him.
As Picard enters the Turbolift, Wesley steps out,
but joins Picard once he sees him. Picard tells the computer to take him to Deck Ten, Forward
Station One. In the Turbolift, Ensign Crusher greets the captain and Picard reciprocates. In the
Turbolift, there is an awkward silence, as Picard's disdain toward children is shown. He paces
the Turbolift. After a while, Captain Picard breaks the silence and tells Wesley that he's sorry
that this mission will delay his reunion with his mother. Wesley Crusher tells the captain that
it's all right, as it will give him some time to finish some projects. There is more awkward
silence, as Wesley has trouble conversing with the captain.
Wesley then tells the captain that it's going to be
hard leaving the Enterprise. Picard says that they have mixed feelings about it. After another
silence, Picard then tries to ease Wesley's apprehension about leaving, saying that it's
difficult leaving any ship, as it was for his mother, when she chose to leave the Enterprise to
become head of Starfleet Medical. The Turbolift doors open and the two step out onto Deck Ten's
corridor, as they continue their conversation. Captain Picard adds that moving from one ship to
another is the life that young Ensign Crusher is choosing. Wesley tells Picard that he
understands. He adds that this isn't any ship. Captain Picard simply responds with, "how true."
Captain Picard then enters Ten-Forward, an area of
the ship where the crewmembers go for drinks and food. Captain Picard goes up to Guinan, the
hostess of Ten-Forward and a new mysterious crewmember. Guinan and the captain greet each other,
then Picard asks her where Dr Pulaski is. When Guinan points in the doctor's direction, Captain
Picard thanks her and proceeds toward her direction. At a table sits Dr Pulaski with someone
else. Picard says her name, Dr Katherine Pulaski and the doctor gets up and tells him that he
must be Captain Picard. Picard tells Pulaski that protocol may have been lax where she came
from, but on the Enterprise. The doctor interrupts him and tells him that he better sit down and
listen to this. When Picard sits, he notices Counselor Deanna Troi sitting there as well. The
counselor is reluctant to share the news to the captain...
In the Observation Lounge, Commander Riker, Lt
Commander Data and Lt Worf waits. Then, Captain Picard, Dr Pulaski and Counselor Troi enter and
take their seat. As they take their seats, Picard contacts Lt Geordi La Forge and asks him of
their progress. Geordi informs him that the containment area is completed and that the last of
the modules are being inserted. Picard orders him to take them to warp six as soon as possible,
and when Geordi acknowledges, Picard takes his seat. Picard then introduces the crew to Dr
Katherine Pulaski, and as Riker shakes her hand, Picard says that they'll deal with the formal
introductions later. After a pause, Captain Picard announces the purpose of their meeting and
simply states that Counselor Deanna Troi is pregnant. He adds that she's going to have a baby.
Commander Riker is the first to react, as does Data
and Worf. Commander Riker adds that this is a surprise. Counselor Troi tells him that it's more
surprising for her. Dr Katherine Pulaski chimes in and says that this pregnancy is unlike
anything she has encountered before. She tells the gathered crew that since she has come to her
a few hours ago, she has made two complete examinations of Counselor Troi. Dr Pulaski goes up to
a wall monitor and presses a button. On the monitor, shows a computer graphic of Counselor
Troi's scans. Dr Pulaski says that this is the first examination and that the fetus is about
halfway through the first trimester. The baby is about six weeks old. She adds that they
understand that Counselor Troi's conception took place eleven hours ago.
An astounded Commander Riker reacts and asks,
"what." Dr Pulaski says that it gets better. She presses a few more buttons and says that this
is the second examination, conducted an hour later. She says that the scans are consistent,
except for the fact that the fetus appears several weeks older. Dr Pulaski says that at this
growth rate, Counselor Troi will have her baby within thirty-six hours. She adds that the normal
gestation rate for a Betazed is ten months. As the crew react, Commander Riker says that he
doesn't mean to be indelicate, but wants to know who the father is. Counselor Troi tells
everyone that last night, while she slept, something, which she could only describe as a
presence, entered her body. Captain Picard tells the crew that an a life form of unknown origin
and intent is breeding inside Counselor Troi's body right now. Their purpose for this meeting is
to determine what is to be done about it and he wants some discussions.
Commander Riker says that Counselor Troi was
impregnated by, by what. He asks the doctor what do the tests show. He asks her if it's
humanoid, or an alien. Dr Pulaski goes to the monitor and says that it's a male human, or in
this case, half-human, half-Betazoid. Commander Riker says that the baby is the same as Deanna.
Dr Pulaski says in every way and adds that she can't determine any other genetic patterns, other
than hers, from her initial scans. As Counselor Troi looks at the monitor, she can hear the
fetus's heartbeat. As the crew continue to discuss this situation, the heartbeat sound
continues.
Commander Riker tells everyone that he doesn't
believe this to be a random occurrence. He believes that there must be a purpose here, a reason.
What, he doesn't know. Worf then tells the captain that the pregnancy must be aborted. Worf adds
that this is for the safety of the ship and the crew. Riker reminds Worf that he can't assume
that the life form's intent is belligerent. Worf says that is the safest assumption. Data then
tells the captain that this is a life form. He adds that not to allow it to develop naturally,
would deny them the opportunity to study it. Worf says that if the fetus is aborted, then
laboratory analysis is still possible. Commander Riker asks the doctor, what the health risks to
Counselor Troi are if the fetus is aborted.
After listening to her baby's heartbeat, Counselor
Troi chimes in and tells Captain Picard that he can do what he feels is necessary to protect the
ship and crew. She tells him to know that she intents to have the baby. As Picard and Riker
react, Captain Picard simply states that, it seems that this discussion is over...
------
As the Enterprise orbits 'aucdet Nine, the Captain's Log indicates
that the Enterprise has finally arrived at 'aucdet Nine, where they will pick up the specimens
of the plasma plague for transport to Rachelis. He says that it's only because so many lives are
at stake that he is willing to put his ship and crew at great risk. Meanwhile, he adds, that
Counselor Troi's pregnancy continues to grow at an astonishing rate...
On the Bridge, Counselor Deanna Troi enters, now
fully pregnant. As Counselor Troi goes to her seat, Ensign Wesley Crusher looks at her from his
Conn Station. As Deanna sits, both Captain Picard and Commander Riker gets up. As they sit,
Captain Picard asks Counselor Troi how she's feeling. Counselor Troi answers that she should be
feeling uncomfortable with all the changes in her body, but she's not. She adds that she's
feeling fine, in fact, better than fine and wonderful. When Ensign Crusher listens in on the
adult's conversation, Commander Riker gives him a stern order to keep the ship in standard
orbit, which the ensign quickly responds to. Captain Picard orders Lt Worf to open hailing
frequencies. When Lt Worf responds that hailing frequencies are open, Picard goes to the
viewscreen.
As Picard goes to the viewscreen, he tells 'aucdet
Nine that this is Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the Starship Enterprise. The viewscreen changes
from the planet to an old man in an environmental suit. He says, "ah, yes, Enterprise you're
here at last." He says good, and tells Picard to let's get going. Affected by the man's
rudeness, Picard asks him to whom he is speaking to. The man rudely repeats Picard's statement
and says that he is speaking to Lt Commander Hester Dealt, medical trustee for the Federation
Medical Collection Station. Picard asks Commander Dealt if the specimens are ready for transfer.
The commander says yes, but he asks Captain Picard's permission to inspect the containment area
before they proceed. He says that this isn't to doubt the ability of Picard's crew, but they
cannot afford to make a mistake.
Captain Picard appreciates the commander's
concerns, and in the light vein, he wants a complete detailed manifest of everything that the
commander intents to bring aboard. The commander says that he will allow the Enterprise access
to his medical banks and ends transmission. As Picard goes back to his seat, he orders Lt
Commander Data to download the inventory and to cross-reference it with the medical database.
Then, he orders Commander Riker to arrange to have Commander Dealt be transported aboard.
As the Enterprise continues to orbit 'aucdet Nine,
the captain's additional log informs us that although it's been fourteen hours since they have
arrived at 'aucdet Nine, Hester Dealt has still not completed inspection of the containment
area. The transfer will not take place, until Hester Dealt is assured of zero growth during
their voyage. Meanwhile, the desperate pleas from the Rachelis system continues... In Cargo Deck
Five, both Lt Commander Hester Dealt and Lt La Forge go over Geordi's containment area. On the
Bridge, Lt Commander Data, who is at the Science Station, informs Captain Picard that they have
received the last manifest. A relieved Picard says at last, then orders Data to go through it
with Dr Pulaski, as he wants them both to be completely familiar with it.
Lt Commander Data steps out of the Turbolift, onto
Deck Twelve. As he turns a corner, he notices Counselor Deanna Troi struggling to walk properly.
She asks Data if he can help her to Sickbay. As Counselor Troi and Lt Commander Data enter
Sickbay, Counselor Troi tells Dr Pulaski that it's time. Dr Pulaski says you bet it is and tells
them that they better get her to maternity. Before they do, Lt Commander Data contacts Lt Worf
and orders him to assemble his security team in Sickbay. The doctor asks Data if that's
necessary and Data reminds the doctor that it is the captain's order. The doctor says that it's
strange to need armed guards in the delivery room, as the three soon head for the delivery
room.
As Data and Dr Pulaski escort Counselor Troi to the
maternity ward, Dr Pulaski asks Deanna how frequent her contractions are. Deanna Troi answers
that her contractions are close together. The doctor soon says that in her other deliveries,
except for two, the father was always present. Counselor Troi says that it's difficult under the
circumstances. Commander Data says that perhaps he could serve in that capacity in this
instance. Pulaski tells Data that Counselor Troi is going to need the comfort of a human hand
and not the cold hand of technology. Troi contradicts the doctor and tells her Commander Data
will do fine. Dr Pulaski says that it's her choice.
Later, Counselor Troi is strapped in the birthing
chair, with Lt Commander Data by her side. Deanna tells Data that he doesn't have to do
anything, just be with her. Pulaski tells the android that he doesn't have to be nervous. Data
reminds the doctor that he's not nervous, but find this all fascinating. Data then tells Deanna
that although he understands technically how the child is born, there are some parts of the
process that eludes him. Data wonders if the counselor is able to access the child's thoughts.
He asks her if the child has any thoughts. He then asks her if she is aware of the child and is
the child aware of her, and when does that awareness begin. Deanna interrupts him and says that
it's happening. When Data asks her how does it feel, Deanna embarrassingly tells him that it's
now. A flustered Data tells the doctor that's it's time and calls her over.
Dr Pulaski comes to Deanna and tells her that this
is an impatient baby and is eager to make his presence known. Pulaski asks Deanna if she wants
something for the pain and will in no way diminish the experience. Deanna tells the doctor that
she has felt no pain. The doctor asks her none, and Deanna repeats, none, none whatsoever. The
doctor reacts. Just then, Lt Worf and his armed security team enter Sickbay. Dr Pulaski cautions
Worf and his team to stand back, and she is aware of the importance of having them here, but he
better keep from under foot. Lt Worf and his men move into position.
Dr Pulaski and an assisting nurse begin the process
of delivering the baby. As they begin, Commander Riker enters Sickbay and watches from the
distance. The doctor asks for the fetal position and the nurse says normal. Then, the doctor
asks for the baby's heart rate and the nurse says it's one-thirty-seven. The doctor says that
the baby is showing healthy respiratory movements and the reaction of the heart-rate is good. As
Deanna continues to breathe, the doctor tells her that the baby's doing wonderfully and tells
her to breathe slowly. As soon as it begins, the baby is finally delivered, as Dr Pulaski says
that it's all done. As the baby appears, the doctor wraps the baby up in a blanket and wipes
away all the dirt. The doctor tells Deanna that the baby is beautiful and hands her baby. The
doctor asks Deanna if easy births are the norm for Betazoids. Deanna says not according to her
mother.
The doctor then tells Lt Worf that he can come in
the rest of the way now. Lt Worf goes up to Deanna and the baby, and just looks at it. The
doctor reminds the lieutenant that he and his men can relax. She says that it's no threat, as it
is just a baby. Worf just stares at the baby, unimpressed. After a while, he leaves. After Worf
leaves, Data thanks Counselor Troi for allowing him to participate, and tells her that it was
remarkable. The doctor asks Deanna if she has a name for the baby and Deanna answers, "Ian
Andrew," and says that it's after her father.
Commander Riker reacts and soon moves forward to
make his announcement. When Riker approaches Deanna, Deanna asks him if he was here all along.
Riker says yes and tells her that the baby is beautiful, just like his mother and kisses her.
The doctor then asks Deanna, how does she feel. Deanna answers that she feels fine and
wonderful, and thanks the doctor for everything. The doctor just reacts with amazing, as mother
and baby continue to look at each other. Deanna has tears rolling down her eyes.
After successfully delivering Counselor Troi's
baby, Dr Pulaski enters the Bridge for the first time. She is awed at the size of the Bridge and
when she goes to the command area, Captain Picard welcomes her to the Bridge and offers her a
seat. She takes a seat in Counselor Troi's usual position, and when they sit, Captain Picard
asks her how Counselor Troi is doing and if she had a good night's sleep. Dr Pulaski tells the
captain that she's delivered dozens of babies, but none like this. She explains that there was
no pain, no trauma and it was effortless for both of them. Commander Riker, who witnessed the
birth, says that it's true to Picard. Picard simply tells the doctor that he's not sure of her
point.
Dr Pulaski says that the counselor had her baby
yesterday and that if she were to examine her now, she could not tell if she had a baby, or ever
had a baby. She adds that it's as though the incident never happened. Soon, Captain Picard asks
Commander Data, how long until they begin the transfer. Data answers, two hours and nineteen
minutes. Picard soon gives command of the Bridge to Commander Riker. The captain says that the
doctor will accompany him, as it is time that he paid his respects.
Later, both Captain Picard and Dr Pulaski approach
Counselor Troi's quarters together. When the door chime rings, the counselor responds and the
two enters. When Picard and Pulaski enter, Picard tells Deanna that he wanted to come by and see
how she was doing and take a look at her. He cuts short, when Deanna shows them that the baby
has grown to about four years old. Baby, finishes Picard and adds, my god. A worried Pulaski
immediately pulls out her tricorder and begin scanning the boy. Captain Picard asks her, how old
is he. The doctor says in actually a day old. Picard contradicts her and soon the doctor
corrects herself and says that Ian is in appearance, four Earth years old. Soon, Counselor Troi
prods the boy to say hello to the captain. An astounded captain asks her if he can talk. In
reply, the boy says hello to the captain. Picard and the doctor reacts, as Picard says hello
back to him. The boy tells him not to worry, as everything is fine.
------
While in orbit of 'aucdet Nine, the captain's supplemental log
explains that they are faced with two problems; Counselor Troi's child and the deadly cargo they
are about to carry. Picard explains that since the hours of his birth, Counselor Troi's child
has continued his rapid growth, and now appears both physically and mentally, to be a child of
eight. He adds that there is still no indication as to who is he and why he is here...
On the Bridge, Commander Riker contacts Sickbay and
informs Dr Pulaski that they're ready to begin loading. Dr Pulaski's com-voice informs Riker
that they need a little more time, because it's taking longer than anticipated, categorizing the
specimens. Riker is not pleased with the doctor's response... In Sickbay, Dr Pulaski is at her
desk, while Data is standing behind her. Dr Pulaski is studying a computer terminal. Dr Pulaski
soon calls Data, but incorrectly pronounces it as Dah-tah, and tells him to take a look at this.
Data tells her his proper name and when the doctor replies, he says that that is how to
pronounce his name. When the doctor asks Data, what's the difference, Data explains that one is
his name, the other is not.
The doctor is soon curious, as she says, "is this
possible." She soon gets up from her seat and takes a tricorder with her. She starts scanning
Data. As she's scanning, she wonders that with all of Data's neural nets, algorithms and
heuristics, she wonders if there's any combination of circuitry that makes up for bruised
feelings. She then repeats that if this is possible. She then goes back to her desk and tells
Data that she is unfamiliar with this symbol, as she points to a symbol on her computer
terminal. Data explains to her that it is a genetically engineered biological life-form. The
doctor says that about twenty percent of the specimens fall into that category. She then adds,
to herself, that some eager beaver is at play here. Unfamiliar with the metaphor, Data queries
her and asks her to explain the meaning of "eager beaver."
Dr Pulaski explains that in this case, eager beaver
refers to some overachieving genetic engineer, who probably for lack of something better to do,
has developed this strain of virus to mutate; just to see how bad, bad can get. After explaining
the metaphor to Data, Dr Pulaski contacts Captain Picard. When Picard answers, Pulaski tells him
that she wanted to let him know what kind of risk they're taking with the plague. When Picard
tells her to continue, Pulaski informs him that if the most innocuous specimens on the manifest
gets loose, it will destroy all life on the Enterprise within a matter of hours. Picard says
that he understands and asks her if she has any recommendations. Pulaski answers that since this
specimen is desperately needed, she doesn't have any recommendation and just wanted Picard to
know what they were carrying.
Picard says that he understands. Then, he gets
Data's attention and says that if he is finished there, he is needed in Transporter Room Three.
Data acknowledges the captain's request and excuses himself from the doctor. The doctor
accidentally mispronounces Data's name again and then corrects herself, as Data leaves.
Elsewhere on the ship, Ian is having fun with other
children in one of the ship's nursery. They are playing with cute little puppies. Soon,
Counselor Troi's voice calls out his name. A female science officer in blue uniform tells
Counselor Troi that he's a very tactile child and that he wants to touch and feel everything.
Troi tells Ian that it's time to go. Ian stops patting the puppies and puts them down. He then
gets up and rushes over to his mom. The science officer is amazed and says that he's actually
grown since she's brought him in. As Ian comes over, he tells Troi that he likes it here. Troi
thought he would. She then tells him to thank Miss Gladstone, the science officer, and tells him
let's go get something to eat. Ian says thank you as told and the other children say their
goodbyes, as the two leave. Miss Gladstone watches them go.
In Transporter Room Three, the computer tells Data
that the bio-transport authorization is completed. As Data moves away from the console, a
transporter chief steps in. The transporter chief soon opens a comm channel and contacts Cargo
Deck Five. He tells Cargo Deck Five that they will begin transporting on their command. In Cargo
Deck Five, Commander Riker and Lt La Forge are at a computer terminal, looking at a display of
the containment module. Lt Commander Hester Dealt, meanwhile, studies the containment module
with a scanning device. Lt La Forge informs Transporter Room that they are ready to receive. In
the Transporter Room, the transporter chief works the console and begins transporting the
materials.
In Cargo Deck Five, the image of the modules being
transported is being shown on the computer terminal. Hester Dealt continues to monitor the
modules as it's being loaded. Soon, Geordi informs Data that the first batch is in place and
that they are waiting for the next. In the Transporter Room, the transporter chief transports
the next batch. Commander Riker soon orders Geordi to inform him when loading is completed and
the cargo secure. Geordi acknowledges, as Riker exits the Cargo Deck. The transporting of the
modules continue.
Meanwhile, in Counselor Troi's quarters, Counselor
Troi heads to the replicators to get Ian's supper, when the door bell chimes. When Troi answers
the door, both Dr Pulaski and Captain Picard enter. Pulaski tells Troi that she came by to see
how Ian was doing. Troi says that they are doing fine and tells her that she was getting him his
supper. Troi works at the replicator, as Ian then asks both Pulaski and Picard if they want
their supper now too. Picard declines, but thanks Ian for the invitation. Soon, Ian plays with a
spoon and throws it the air. He misses the spoon, as he tries to catch it. Picard picks up the
spoon and hands it to him.
Soon, Ian asks the captain if he's played with
puppies. As Troi brings over Ian's food, she tells the captain that they had a litter at the
nursery today. Picard tells Ian that he doesn't think he's played with puppies before. Ian tells
the captain that he should go to the nursery, while the puppies are still there. Picard tells
Ian, perhaps later. Ian then studies the plate of food in front of him, then sticks a finger in
a hot soup bowl and yells in pain. Troi rushes over to him, as Pulaski also goes to him and
tells him to let her have a look at it and pulls out a medical equipment, healing the burn. She
tells him that that's not so bad. Then, Ian notices that he's face is wet from crying and tells
his mom so. Troi washes his face with her hand and asks him if that's better.
As mother and son hug, Pulaski and Picard move
aside for a private conference. Pulaski tells Picard that Ian intentionally burned himself, for
the experience, Picard finishes for her. Pulaski then wonders who is Ian, why is he here and
what does he want. Picard then goes to Ian again and asks him why is he here. Not understanding
the captain's question, Ian tells him that it's because mommy said it was time to eat. Picard
corrects himself and asks why is he here on this ship. Ian says that he lives here. Deanna
clarifies the question for Ian and tells him that the captain wants to know if he is ready to
tell them why he came to this ship. Ian says, not yet. Picard is more than impressed by that
answer and gets up. Troi joins Picard and Pulaski, and tells them that the answers are within
him. She adds that when his cognitive powers are fully developed, he will be able to articulate
it. Picard tells her that he hopes Ian will tell them soon.
After seeing the counselor and Ian, Captain Picard
returns to the Bridge, where Commander Riker waits for him by the Tactical Station. He tells the
captain that the cargo has been loaded and secure. Picard orders Riker to leave orbit of 'aucdet
Nine and set a course for Rachelis, warp six. Riker acknowledges... Meanwhile, Ensign Wesley
Crusher enters the Ten-Forward lounge and goes to the window, standing there. Guinan, the bar
hostess, sees him and excuses the person she was talking to and goes to Wesley Crusher.
When Guinan goes to Wesley, she asks him if she can
get him anything. Wesley says no, and says that he would just like to stand here. Guinan says
she doesn't blame him, as it's beautiful. Then, Guinan asks Wesley if he would like some
Mareuvian Tea. Wesley declines the offer. After a pause, Guinan tells Wesley that he'll be
leaving soon and Wesley agrees with her. As soon as she says that, the Enterprise leaves orbit
of 'aucdet Nine, ready to go to warp for Rachelis. As Wesley continues to look out the window,
Guinan asks him what does he see when he looks out that window. Wesley says that he sees the
Lorenze cluster, and then there's Arneb, and Epsilon Indi. Guinan says that that's not what she
meant and clarifies herself. She asks him that when he looks out there, doesn't he see his
future. Wesley tells her that it'll still be there.
As Guinan nods, she asks him if he would like a cup
of nectar, direct from Prometheus. Wesley again declines the offer, and getting annoyed at her
insistence, Wesley tells her that that was the third time that she's asked him. Guinan reminds
Wesley that that's what she's expected to do, as part of her job. She then asks him if he does
what's expected of him. Wesley says that he tries. Guinan asks him, even if it's not what he
really wants. Wesley says sometimes, then clarifies himself further. He explains to her that
it's important to consider others before themselves. Guinan agrees, but adds that the game is to
know when to consider themselves, more than others, give them permission to be selfish. As she
says this, the Enterprise jumps to warp, on course for the Rachelis system. Guinan leaves Wesley,
as he ponders what she said to him.
As the Enterprise heads for the Rachelis system at
warp six, an alarm sounds on the containment module in the Cargo Deck. Lt Commander Hester Dealt
tells Lt La Forge that something's wrong. Geordi rushes over to Dealt and asks him what is it.
Hester Dealt tells Geordi that there's growth in the containment module. Geordi asks him where,
and Dealt answers L-seven-three. Geordi contacts the Bridge and when Captain Picard answers, he
tells him that there's a malfunction in the containment module. A worried Picard asks him how
serious is it, and Lt Commander Hester Dealts answers for him and says that it's very serious.
Picard reacts...

As the Enterprise heads for the Rachelis system at warp speed, the
captain's additional log explains that for reasons yet unknown, one of the deadly specimens of
plasma plague has begun to grow...
In Cargo Deck Five, Lt La Forge is on the comlink
with Captain Picard. He tells the captain that he's checked everything and that there is no
reason for this to be happening. He says that he can't even isolate the cause of the problem. On
the Bridge, Commander Riker and Lt Commander Data head down to Cargo Deck Five. Captain Picard
soon contacts Dr Pulaski in Sickbay and when she answers, he informs her that they are having
problems in the Cargo Deck. He says that her presence is required there. Dr Pulaski tells the
captain that she's on her way.
With the emergency going on in Cargo Deck Five,
Wesley Crusher is having a conversation with Guinan in Ten-Forward. He has an empty plate in
front of him. Wesley tells Guinan that she never talks about herself, but Guinan disagrees
saying that she does all the time. Wesley then tells her that people say that she's very old.
When Guinan is curious, Wesley elaborates by saying that Guinan knew the captain before she came
aboard, when he was on the Stargazer, ("THE BATTLE"). Guinan contradicts him and says that she never knew the captain
until she came aboard. Wesley tells Guinan that everyone's curious about her and Guinan replies
with, "I'll bet they are." Wesley tells her that they wanna know where she comes from and when
Guinan asks him where do they say, Wesley tells her that they tell him that she's from Nova Kron
and that...
Before he can finish, he is interrupted by a call
from Captain Picard, who requests his presence on the Bridge. Wesley acknowledges the call and
tells the captain that he's on his way. As he gets to his feet, he tells Guinan that he's got to
go. Before he leaves, Wesley turns around and thanks Guinan for everything. Misconstruing his
meaning, Guinan wonders if he's thanking her for the dish of Delovian souffle. Wesley tells her
that he didn't mean for the souffle, but for the rest. Guinan reminds Wesley that that's why
she's here. Wesley thanks her again and leaves Ten-Forward.
In the Cargo Deck, Commander Riker asks the team
there, why this module and not the others. Lt Commander Data then asks the computer to run a
diagnostic on module L-seven-three. The computer replies that all circuits are functional. Soon,
Lt La Forge, who is studying the containment modules, tells everyone that the environments
programmed. The temperature is set at ninety-seven degrees Kelvin, radiation flux is zero and
that the statis field is nominal. He says that everything is exactly as it should be and right
down the line. Data soon suggests that it is a sensor malfunction and queries the computer. He
asks the computer if growth is actually occurring in module L-seven-three. The computer
confirms.
Just then, Dr Pulaski enters Cargo Deck Five and
approaches the group. When the doctor approaches, Commander Riker tells her that one of the
specimens is growing. Pulaski urgently tells the men to destroy it now, but Lt Commander Hester
Dealt tells her that he can't. Soon, Commander Riker tells Data to prepare to jettison the
module. Commander Dealt advises the commander against it as he elaborates that the module will
go into a spore and remain, until it comes in contact with a planet of another ship. The results
will be disastrous. Riker isn't pleased with Dealt's attitude and tells him that however bad
this is, it's actually worse. Dealt explains to Riker that the containment module will not hold
the specimen. Riker tells him to continue.
Dealt tells them that the rate of growth is
increasing rapidly. Within thirty minutes, the specimen will push out of it's module, within two
hours, it will break the containment area. When Lt La Forge tries to reassure his friends that
it can't break through this, Dealt contradicts him and says that yes, it will. Riker soon
contacts Captain Picard and tells him that they may not be able to get the situation under
control. He recommends that they evacuate all non-essential personnel to the saucer section. He
says that if they lose containment, they should be prepared to separate the saucer. Picard
agrees with Riker's suggestion and tells him to make it so. The doctor soon wonders why this one
module and not the others. She soon suggests that something is stimulating it's growth. She asks
Dealt if he has the etiology on the module and how it was developed.
The commander says that it's all on the computer,
as both Pulaski and Dealt go to the computer console. As Pulaski presses a button, she reads
from the screen. Dr Pulaski tells her comrades that the module is a mutated strain developed by
Dr Susan Nuress during a plasma plague outbreak seventy years ago in the Oby system. It was
number nine in a series of fifty eight tests and this one, bombarded by low levels of Eichner
radiation. Commander Dealt starts working on his scanner, as Pulaski asks him if exposure to
Eichner radiation could stimulate growth. Dealt says that it could, but. He breaks off and tells
them that he's got some, as he reads his scanner. Riker asks him why didn't he detect this
before. Dealt tells him that it wasn't here before.
The doctor says that it is now and wonders what
emits Eichner radiation. When Data suggests a subspace phase inverter, Geordi says that they
don't have one. When Data suggests certain types of cyanoacrylates, the doctor says that that's
not also on the ship. Urgently, she says they have to find it, because it's here.
In her quarters, Counselor Troi has put Ian to bed
and is closing the window to block out the stars. In bed, Ian tells her mommy that he can sense
that the people on this ship are worried, getting the Betazoid trait from the counselor. Troi
says that she feels it as well, but tells Ian not to worry. Ian tells the confused counselor
that it's because of him. When Troi asks him what, Ian says that it's him. Ian then tells her
that he has to leave her now, or it will be bad for all of them. A worried counselor asks him
what is he saying and Ian repeats that he has to leave. Troi asks him again, leave and then
starts to understand him. She tells him that he's going to die and says that he can't. Soon, a
sobbering counselor contacts Sickbay and tells them that she needs the doctor here now. She
lifts Ian's lifeless body to her and starts to cry.
------
In Counselor Troi's quarters, Dr Pulaski, Commander Riker and Lt
Commander Data enter. Both Pulaski and Data has tricorders in their hands and begins to scan
Ian. Counselor Troi tells the doctor that it's Ian and tells her to hurry. As Pulaski rushes to
Ian, she asks the counselor what happened and if Ian ate anything or if he had a fall. Troi
tells Pulaski no and as Data scans Ian, he informs Riker that Ian is the source of the Eichner
radiation. Counselor Troi tells them that Ian said that he was the reason the ship was in
danger. Data tells her that that analysis is correct. Pulaski works feverishly on Ian, but soon
tells Troi that she's losing Ian's life signs. As Pulaski works, she soon feels for a pulse on
Ian's neck. Troi looks at her, but Pulaski gives her a solemn shake of the head. Pulaski tells
her that she's sorry and joins both Riker and Data, as Troi continues to cry.
As Troi and the others watch the lifeless body of
Ian, Ian's body transforms into the energy ball seen earlier, as it passed into Troi's body.
Ian's non-corporeal body moves into the hands of Counselor Troi and the two soon start
communicating telepathically. Counselor Troi manages to smile during the telepathy and after
communicating with the counselor, Ian's energy ball leaves the ship. Riker, Data and Pulaski
watch with awe as Ian leaves the ship. After Ian leaves the ship, Lt La Forge contacts Commander
Riker and tells him that the containment field has stabilized. A somber Riker thanks the
lieutenant. Troi then says that Ian was right, he was the cause. A sad Riker says apparently so.
After a sad pause, Counselor Troi tells the group
that Ian was a life-force entity. When they passed each other in space, he was curious about
them and wanted to know them. He decided the best way to do that was to go through the process,
to be born, to live as one of them and in that way, understand them better. Deanna tells them
that he never meant them any harm. As Troi continues to cry, Riker tells her that there was a
moment when she smiled. Troi tells them that Ian said thank you and that he will miss them. Troi
then says that she told him that they will miss him, and she will miss him. Soon, Riker and the
others leave Troi to contemplate her loss.
The Enterprise soon arrives at Station Tango
Sierra. On the Bridge, Captain Picard orders Ensign Crusher to maintain standard station orbit.
Wesley acknowledges. Picard then contacts Transporter Room Three and tells them that they have
arrived at the station. He says that they should make this transfer with all deliberate speed.
In the Transporter Room, Data acknowledges the captain. On the Bridge, Riker tells the captain
that he'll be glad to be relieved of this cargo. Captain Picard then gives command of the Bridge
to Riker, as he heads for his Ready Room. Ensign Crusher follows the captain, and before the
captain enters his Ready Room, he asks him if he can speak with him when he has a moment. Picard
tells him, in his Ready Room, when his duties permit. Wesley thanks the captain.
In Cargo Deck Five, Lt Geordi La Forge asks Lt
Commander Hester Dealt, how long it would take to develop a vaccine. Dealt informs Geordi that
they may never develop one. A despondent Geordi says that all of this was for nothing then.
Dealt encourages him and says, let's hope not. Data tells the two that they are ready to
energize. As Dealt stands ready to be transported, Geordi tells him good luck. After Dealt
dematerializes Geordi informs Data that he can lock onto the first group and begin transport.
In his Ready Room, Captain Picard is studying a
computer terminal, when there is a chime at the door. When Picard answers, Ensign Wesley Crusher
enters. He goes up to the captain and tells him that he's thought about this a lot and that he
wants to remain on the Enterprise. Picard turns off the computer terminal he was working on, and
asks Wesley if he's asked his mother yet about his decision. Wesley says that he hasn't yet, and
before he did, he wanted his permission to remain on board. Picard tells the young man that it's
a little more complicated than that. Wesley tells the captain that this is where he wants to be,
and that this is where he feels he belongs.
Soon, Commander Riker's com-voice tells the captain
that the transfer is complete and that they are ready to leave orbit. Picard orders Wesley to
return to his station, and as Wesley tries to get an answer out of him, Picard just stares at
him. Wesley exits.
Both Picard and Counselor Troi enter the Bridge.
Riker informs the captain that all system is secure. Picard orders Ensign Crusher to set a
course for the Morgana Quadrant. As Wesley acknowledges, Picard tells Riker that Ensign Crusher
has requested permission to remain on the Enterprise. Riker says that he's not surprised, and
asks Picard how did he respond. Picard says that he hasn't yet, as it wasn't his decision alone.
He adds that Wesley Crusher's remaining will create difficulties for all of them. Riker agrees,
and says that with his mother not around, who will see to his studies. Picard agrees and says
that that responsibility will fall on Lt Commander Data. Then Riker wonders who's going to tuck
him at nights. Knowing that the commander is just joking, Wesley says, "Come on, Commander."
Soon, Lt Worf volunteers to accept that
responsibility. Counselor Troi smiles, and says that they know that he will get his sleep.
Picard then says that that takes care of the practical side, but there's more to that than
growing up. He believes that Commander Riker is more than qualified to serve in that capacity,
and asks him if he's willing to serve. Commander Riker thinks for a second before answering, of
course he would. Picard then orders Wesley to contact his mother at Starfleet Medical. He tells
her to give him his regards and that he has his permission to stay aboard, but will only do so
according to her wishes.
A happy Wesley says that he will and thanks the
captain. He knows that she will agree. The captain then asks the young ensign if he has the
course and speed laid in. When Wesley says that he does, Picard orders him to engage. The
Enterprise soon heads for the Morgana Quadrant...
