While on a diplomatic mission to greet the Jarada, an insect-like species, Captain Picard, Data, Crusher and Whalen become trapped in the Holodeck...

------

As the Enterprise travels at impulse speed inside a nebulae, Commander Riker's Log reports that they are about to make a brief, but necessary contact with the Jarada, a reclusive insect-like race, known for their idiosyncratic attitude toward protocol. He says that the Jarada demand a precise greeting, in this case, from Captain Picard. He adds that their language is most unusual, as the slightest mispronounciation is regarded as an insult.

On the Bridge, Commander Riker is in command, while in the Ready Room, Counselor Deanna Troi is tutoring Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the Jaradan language. In the Ready Room, Picard says that unless it's followed by. Troi adds that the double bars indicate an elongated "S" sound. Picard then says that the inverted "T" becomes a "zee". Troi asks, "Unless," and Picard finishes that unless it's followed by three wavy lines, in which case the "zee" becomes a "bee." Troi says exactly and Picard slaps the table and says, what a language. Troi reminds Picard that they spell knife with a k. Picard jokingly says that he spells knife with an n, and tells Troi that he could never spell. Troi reminds Picard that this is an insect-mind. Picard says that his mind is barely working.

As Troi sits down, she tells the Captain to take a break. Picard shakes his head and tells Troi that he wants to go over this again. He looks at his computer terminal. Troi cautions the Captain that he could be over preparing. Troi reminds the Captain that he has been looking forward to the upgrade of the Holodeck. Picard shakes his head as he continues to study. Troi strongly reminds the Captain that he has the time and that he needs the diversion. As Picard thinks, he finally says "Dixon Hill." Troi smiles and tells him that the program is installed and waiting for him.

Outside the Holodeck, Captain Picard is inputting his program into the computer. The computer asks Picard for the program's desired location. Picard inputs Earth, United States, San Francisco, California into the computer. The computer then asks Picard to input the time period. Picard inputs nineteen-forty one, A.D., into the computer. The computer then asks for the file or access code. Picard inputs "Dixon Hill" and "Private Detective." The computer lights up and tells Picard that the program is completed and he may enter when ready. As the Holodeck doors open, Picard makes a Personal Log entry, where he states that he is about to enter the Holodeck, where images of reality will be created by the computer. He says that it's highly useful in crew training, but highly enjoyable when used for recreation and games.

When the Holodeck doors open, Picard sees an exact duplicate of Dixon Hill's office and a cleaning lady mopping the floor. The door in front of him reads, "312, Dixon Hill, Private Investigator." Picard looks around in awe and finally opens the door. Dixon Hill's secretary laughs when she sees Picard and she asks him if he lost another bet. Picard doesn't understand the secretary's question and when he asks, the secretary tells Dix that it's his bellboy suit. She wonders if Picard is going to moonlight at the Fairmont. Picard finally understands and tells her that it's the uniform. He says that it's totally inappropriate and that he should have changed.

As the secretary puts on her coat and retrieves her handbag, she tells Dixon Hill that Detective Bell, Dixon Hill's cop friend McNary's new partner, came snooping around. She says that if Bell had seen Hill in these threads, he would've personally sent Hill to the funny farm. Picard is perplexed by the secretary's language. She informs him that Mr Leech called twice and that a woman named Bradley is waiting for him in his office. She says that she's got nice legs, but Picard misconstrues the meaning and looks down at his legs. The secretary explains her metaphor. She tells Hill that she's got a hot date with her fella and heads out, laughing at Picard's uniform as she does. Picard smiles and closes the door behind her.

When Picard opens the door to his office, sexy legs belonging to Mrs Bradley, greet him. Mrs Bradley reacts to Picard's uniform, and Picard remembers his conversation with Hill's secretary and tells her that he lost a bet. Mrs Bradley simply shrugs and says that at least he's ready for Halloween. Picard is confused and asks her what is Halloween. Mrs Bradley ignores Picard and simply goes toward his window. She tells Mr Hill that she needs his help. She informs him that someone is trying to kill her...

------

As the USS Enterprise travels at impulse, the Captain's Log reports that he is marvelled at how real the computer has recreated the fictional world of Dixon Hill; a twentieth-century detective who has been his hero since childhood. He says that the characters are merely generated by the computer, but they all appear real to him and seem real to him in every way...

As Picard looks out into the streets below, Mrs Bradley tells Detective Hill that she doesn't know who's trying to kill her. She then suggests that it could be her husband or her stepdaughter and Picard adds that it could be her lover. She partially agrees and says that it could even be Cyrus Redblock. She wants Detective Hill to find out for her and for him to name his fee. Picard goes to her and says that it'll cost her twenty dollars a day plus expenses. Mrs Bradley agrees, but Picard reminds her that he hasn't said yes yet. Mrs Bradley gets up and goes to Mr Hill and tells him that he'll say yes. She then proceeds to kiss him, leaving her lipstick on his face. After kissing him, she tells Detective Hill that if it is Redblock, he must think that she's got what he's looking for. She tells Hill to believe her that she doesn't. Picard says that he'll take her word for it.

Mrs Bradley then takes out a crisp note from her purse and tells Mr Hill that this is a C-note in advance. She says to consider it a retainer for his troubles. She looks for a place to put the note, in Picard's awkward uniform, but in the end she puts it down the front of his shirt. She tells him to wear a suit next time. Mrs Bradley heads for the exit, but before she exits, she turns around and takes Detective Hill's business card. Mrs Bradley says au revoir and leaves. After Mrs Bradley leaves, Picard goes to Hill's desk and feels everything in front of him. Suddenly, a car honk startles him and he goes to look out the window to see cars crossing the streets. Picard says remarkable and asks the computer for the exit. The Holodeck arch appears to his side. Picard claps his hands and heads for the exit.

Before Picard leaves, there is a knock at Dixon Hill's office. Picard calls out to the person and says that he'll have to call again, as he was just leaving. He says that he's not properly dressed and that he'll be back. Picard exits the Holodeck and the doors disappear. After Picard leaves, the man enters Detective Hill's office anyway and finds no one there. The man wonders where Detective Hill is as he looks around... Outside the Holodeck control panel, Picard orders the computer to save current setting into memory. The computer replies that the current setting has been saved. Picard smiles and he still has lipstick on his lips from when Mrs Bradley kissed him. As Picard walks down the corridors, crewmembers react curiously to the lipstick on his lips.

In the Observation Lounge, an excited Captain Picard tells his gathered crew about what he saw in the Holodeck. Picard says that when he looked out the window, he actually saw "automobiles." "Automobiles?" asks a puzzled Worf. Picard nods, as Data explains to Worf that automobiles were an ancient Earth device, primarily used for transportation. Picard agrees and Data adds that automobiles were often seen as a source for status and virility. Data adds that it is often a prime ingredient in teenage mating rituals and looks in Wesley's direction. Teenage mating rituals, repeats Wesley and smiles, liking the idea. Picard continues and says that from that window, he could see an entire, searching for the right word, he draws a shape. "City block," answers Data and Picard agrees.

Picard goes to Dr Crusher and says that the sounds and smell, and she finishes by saying that he makes it sound real to them. Picard says that's how it felt. Incredible, says Dr Crusher and gets up to wipe the lipstick off Picard's lips. Picard becomes embarrassed and tells Dr Crusher that he's going to go again, only this time he's going to dress the part. He asks her why not come with him. Dr Crusher says that she'd like that. After she answers him, Picard says that he wants to take that twentieth-century historian, searching for the name. Dr Crusher answers for him and says Whalen. Picard says that he bets that Whalen will probably know more about Dixon Hill than he does. Data asks Picard if he should tell him. Picard reminds Data that he should invite him, as this is supposed to be a recreational activity.

Picard says that the sense of reality was absolutely incredible that when that woman kissed him it felt, exciting says Dr Crusher. Real, Picard corrects her. Picard suddenly becomes serious and tells the staff that the purpose of this briefing is to discuss the Jaradan rendezvous, which leaves Wesley and Troi laughing. Picard orders Mr Riker to lead the briefing as he sits down. Commander Riker tells the gathered crew that this is simply a diplomatic mission, as the Jaradan are strategically important to the Federation. He says that previous attempts at contact failed because the Jaradan are easily irritated. A slip in the pronunciation caused a twenty-year rift. Therefore, the Captain must recite the greeting perfectly, adds Counselor Troi. Simple as that, asks Geordi.

Data says yes and that if the Captain makes even the slightest mistake. Troi interrupts him and tells Data that the Captain is well aware of the gravity of the situation. Data says that everyone is aware of the tape of the last Federation starship to encounter the Jaradan. He says that it graphically demonstrates what happened to its Captain when he offended them. Troi reminds Data that the Captain is familiar with that. Data asks the Captain if they should not re-run it, but the Captain insists that it's not necessary. He then tells the staff that the meeting is adjourned and gets up.

Later, Geordi and Data are heading back to their quarters and Data asks Geordi, why would the Captain not want to review all available information on the Jaradan. Geordi reminds Data that when they've seen what the Jaradan can do once, they don't need to see it again. Soon, Data changes the subject and tells Geordi that this Dixon Hill character sounds interesting. Geordi says not really, as he was just your twentieth-century Sherlock Holmes. Data wonders if his modus operandi was not dissimilar. Geordi says indubitably and Data enters his quarters.

On the Bridge, Lt Commander Data is at the science station. He orders the computer to call up all biographical information to the fictional character, Dixon Hill. The computer replies, working and after a split second later, begin relaying the information along with text on the monitor. The computer informs Data that Dixon Hill first appeared in pulp magazine, "Amazing Detective Stories," copyright 1934 A.D. The computer pauses and adds that Hill's second appearance was in the novel, "The Long Dark Tunnel," circa 1936. Data then requests complete text of all stories involving said character. As the computer relays the information, Data orders it to increase speed, as he absorbs the information faster than any human can.

As the Enterprise sets course for the Jaradan homeworld, the Captain's Log reports that the Jaradan rendezvous is still eleven hours away and he is about to re-enter the world of Dixon Hill, this time properly dressed. He adds that an experience like this is more enjoyable when shared, so he's invited fiction expert Whalen to accompany him. He says that Dr Crusher will join them shortly.

Outside the Holodeck, Captain Picard is dressed in twentieth-century clothing and puts on a hat, as he waits for Whalen. Seconds later, historian Whalen approaches the Holodeck, also wearing twentieth-century gear. Picard asks Whalen if he is ready for San Francisco. Whalen replies that he is more than ready. Picard tells him that if it's anything like last time, than he won't be disappointed. Picard is interrupted by the Turbolift doors opening and sees Data wearing the same outfit as they are. Data requests permission to accompany them and as Picard looks doubtfully at him, Data says that he is totally versed in the genre of the period. Picard tells the gentlemen, shall we, and puts up his collar. As they face the Holodecks, the doors open and they see the vista of San Francisco before their eyes...

------

Picard, Data and Whalen enter the Holodeck to the wonderment of San Francisco. The three cross the street to the other side, as they admire the scenery of old San Francisco. When they cross the street, they come across a news stand where the vendor hands a paper to a driver parked on the kerb. When the vendor sees Dixon Hill, he asks him how's tricks. Picard tells him that she's fine. Whalen tells the Captain that it's amazing that these people think that he is Dixon Hill. Picard ignores him. As Picard see everyone buying a paper, he tells the vendor that he would like a paper, but he seem to have forgotten his money, as he searches his jacket. The vendor hands him a paper and tells Dix that he can pay him later. Picard thanks the vendor and takes the paper.

As Picard looks at the paper, Whalen picks up a magazine and starts reading. Picard reads the paper: "Hitler on the move," "Roosevelt presses Congress for British aid," "DiMaggio leading streak reaches 37." When the Captain pronounces DiMaggio wrong, Data corrects it for him as DiMaggio. Joltin' Joe of the Yankee Clippers. When Picard is puzzled by Data's explanation, Whalen steps in and tells the Captain that he's referring to baseball, and it was a national obsession at the time. Data adds that the streak they're referring to will be broken in fifty-six games, to which the vendor cackles. Data says that DiMaggio's streak will be snapped by a pair of journeyman hurlers for the Cleveland Indians. Cleveland, the vendor says in disgust. He says that they never got no pitchers and they had no pitchers. He asks Data if he's nuts or something.

Data ignores the vendor and tells the Captain that the record will stand until the year 2026, when a short-stop for the London Kings. Before Data can finish, an irate vendor asks Dixon Hill what gives with this guy. He soon asks Dix that he's not from around here, isn't he. Before Data can answer, Picard says that he's not and that he's from South America. The vendor says that he's got a nice tan. Picard turns the page on the newspaper and reads the headline, "Wealthy Socialite Murdered." An astounded Picard says that he should've listened to her. He tells his mates that someone was trying to kill her. Whalen reminds the Captain that she was a page from a book, that's all she ever was and will be.

Soon, two men approach Dixon Hill and his friends. A portly fella named Detective Bell and his partner, a slender type named McNary, which the secretary mentioned. Bell says well, well, well, look what the cat dragged in. The cat, asks Data puzzled. When Bell sees Data, he asks where the hell did he came from. The vendor replies for him, "He's from South America," and asks him if he can't tell. Detective Bell tells Data that wherever he's from, while he's in his town he keeps his nose clean. Dan tells Dixon Hill, a tough guy, that his goose is cooked for good this time. McNary apologizes to Dix for this, but Dan tells him not to.

Dan asks Dix where he was between the hours of ten and midnight. Picard tells Dan that that would be difficult to explain. Dan says that he'll have plenty of time to come up with something, as they are going downtown. Picard looks at his friends, who all smile as they are keen to go downtowm. Picard puts down his newspaper and asks Detective Bell, for what? Bell explains that he wants to be questioned for the murder of Jessica Bradley, as he found his business card in her purse.

On the Bridge, Commander Riker enters via the Turbolift. Riker asks Lt Tasha Yar for a status report. Tasha reports that they're being probed. "The Jarada?" asks Troi. Tasha says that it's possible, but it's long range and they can't be certain where it's originating from. The ship suddenly shakes and a purple glow is seen running down the corridors of the ship, the Jaradan probe. The probe soon wreaks havoc with the Holodeck and the doors keep opening and closing, while the Dixon Hill program is still running. Back on the Bridge, Commander Riker goes toward the Conn and Ops and says that one could get the feeling that the Jarada don't exactly trust them. Soon, Geordi informs the Commander that they're receiving a subspace message from the Jarada. Riker tells Geordi that that wasn't part of the plan and orders him to pipe it through.

Over the speaker, a female Jarada voice is heard, which is like a lizard. The Jaradan representative informs the Enterprise that they speak to them in their language and that the time has come for them to honor them in theirs. Commander Riker introduces himself and the Jaradan interrupts and asks him if he's not the Captain. Riker replies that he's not, and soon he suggests that they commence screen to screen communication. The Jaradan once again interrupts and says that they will not show themselves to a mere subordinate. The Jaradan awaits the Captain's greeting with growing unrest and ends communication. Riker sighs, "Terrific," and pats Geordi on the shoulder. He orders him to go find the Captain and he'll find him in the Holodeck. As Geordi goes to search for the Captain, Worf takes over his position.

Outside the Holodeck, a dressed up Dr Beverly Crusher is adjusting her stocking. As Dr Crusher steps through the Holodeck, the computer seems to be having a problem whether or not to let her in, after being affected by the probe. But, the Doctor manages to enter the Holodeck. Dr Crusher enters an old police station inside the Holodeck. Data is reading an old bulletin board, while Whalen is looking at some police clippings. Dr Crusher slips on her high heels as she enters the Holodeck, and Data notices this. Data greets the Doctor, as Whalen comes up to them and the Doctor informs Data that she had trouble getting in. She then asks Data where is Captain Picard. Data tells Crusher that he's on ice. Not understanding Data's lingo, she asks him what. Data says that he's being grilled.

Dr Crusher asks Data if the Captain is a fish. Seeing that the Doctor is having trouble understanding Data, Whalen steps in and explains to her that the Captain is being interrogated. He adds that they think the Captain's committed a murder. She then wonders why aren't they all being interrogated. She then suggests that she go and help the Captain out. As she is about to run off, Whalen interrupts her and tells her to relax as the Captain is having the time of his life. An exasperated Doctor wonders why the Captain should have all the fun and sits down next to a curvaceous woman. After Dr Crusher sits down, a police officer comes and takes the woman away, calling her toots. Dr Crusher covers up her body.

Inside an interrogation room, an angry Detective Bell goes up to Picard and tells him to spill it. Picard tells Bell that he's told him everything he knows. An irate Bell tells him that Picard will have to tell him again, from the top and spits in his face, "from the top!" Picard laughs and tells Bell that he's read all this before and it's absolutely as it should be. Bell steps away from Picard angrily...

Outside the Holodeck, Lt La Forge presses the panels to try and contact the Captain, but to no avail. Geordi contacts the Bridge and when Riker responds, he tells the Commander that he can't find the Captain. Riker reminds Geordi that he's in the Holodeck, but Geordi says that he's at the Holodeck and tells him that something's gone wrong. Riker wonders what the Lieutenant is saying. Geordi tells him that he can't communicate with him, he can't access the program and he can't open the doors. On the Bridge, everyone reacts to Geordi's news...

------

As the Enterprise heads for the Jaradan system, Commander Riker's Log indicate that due to a break down in the ship's system, they are unable to communicate with the Captain... On the Bridge, Riker orders Lt Yar to take over the Bridge, as he's heading down to the Holodeck. As Lt Yar heads for the command seat and Riker heads for the Turbolift, Ensign Wesley Crusher tells the Commander that he's studied all the technical manuals for the Holodeck and believe he can be of some help down there.

Riker tells Wesley that Geordi is quite capable of handling the situation down there and he needs him on the Bridge where his duties lie. As he's about to continue on, Counselor Troi steps in and tells Riker that Wesley's mother is missing also. Riker tells Wesley to join him and Wesley smiles at Troi for thanking her to get him to go along. Wesley and Riker enter the Turbolift.

Inside the police station's interrogation room, Detective Dan Bell interrogates Dixon Hill and asks him if he's never seen Mrs Bradley before he hired her. Annoyed by Bell's persistence, Picard tells him that he's already told him that twice. An angry Bell says that he's going to have to tell him again, from the top and gets in Picard's face. Picard tells the fellows that this isn't amusing anymore and as he tries to get up, Bell forcibly pushes Picard down. Bell wonders if Hill is tougher than him, and reminds him that he's nobody. Dixon Hill's friend McNary tells Bell to take it easy, as Bell angrily storms off. McNary tells Dix not to take Bell too seriously, as his old lady's been giving him a hard time and he knows how it is. Picard tells McNary tell he really needs to get out of here and McNary says that he'll see what he can do.

Outside the interrogation room, Dr Beverly Crusher is looking at the curvaceous woman from before. As the blonde woman is powdering her nose, Dr Crusher takes out hers and starts to powders hers, while a police officer looks on with delight from behind. After Dr Crusher finishes powdering her nose, the police officer coughs and Dr Crusher asks him if he has something on his mind. The police officer says sure, but he's uncertain if he can repeat it in mixed company.

After Crusher puts her nose powder in her purse, the police officer offers her a gum. As she takes the gum, the officer says that she is a hep looking broad. Dr Crusher wonders if that's a good thing and the officer says that it ain't bad. The officer soon leans forward and asks her if she likes Tommy Dorsey. As Dr Crusher nods, he says that he's got tickets for the dance tomorrow night and wonders if she's interested to attend. He shows her the tickets and watches her swallow the gum, instead of chewing it.

Outside the Holodeck, Commander Riker and Wesley Crusher arrive via a Turbolift. When he sees Commander Riker, Geordi gets up and Riker asks him if he's tried the intercom. Geordi says yes and Riker tries the intercom himself, but gets no response. Ensign Crusher soon goes to an open panel and takes out a device. He puts it on the panel and starts looking through it. Riker asks Wesley if he's seeing anything and Wesley says no. Riker asks them what he can do to help and Geordi answers nothing. He adds that they have to go through this millimeter by millimeter. Riker says all right and tells Geordi to get it fixed. Geordi goes back down to Wesley and tells him to slow down. He says that if there's an anomaly there, they could go right past it.

Back in the interrogation room, McNary consults with Detective Bell, as Picard sweats under the hot lamp. By the door, McNary tells Dan that he's known Hill for ten years and he wouldn't do anything like this. Dan relents to McNary's posturing. McNary tells a waiting Hill that they're cutting him loose. Hill tells him that that's welcome news. Detective Bell warns Picard that he better not try and leave town, but Picard reminds him that if he leaves town, then the town leaves with him. After Bell leaves, Hill tells McNary that his friend doesn't seem to like him. McNary tells Hill that they know he's working with Redblock and take it from him, it doesn't help his case. Hill tells McNary that he'll keep that in mind. Picard thanks McNary, but McNary says forget it.

As both men get up, they put on their coats and McNary offers Picard a cigarette. A curious Picard takes the cigarette and McNary lights it up. After Picard takes a puff, he coughs and doesn't like the taste. He discards the cigarette. Soon, McNary asks Hill if he would like to come to supper with him at his place. He knows how much Hill loves his wife Sharon's cooking and the kids will love to have him there. Picard says soon, as he says he has other duties to attend to. McNary jokingly asks if it's blondes or brunettes. Picard tells McNary that she's a lady all right and her name's Enterprise. McNary says that she sounds like a working girl to him. He adds that he'll stop by the office with a bottle of scotch and that he can tell him all about her.

As Picard and McNary steps out of the office, Picard stops short as he sees Dr Crusher. McNary rolls his eyes as he exits the station. When Picard approaches Beverly, she asks him if he had a good time. Picard tells her that he isn't sure, as it seems almost too real sometimes. Picard says that he is glad she could make it and that she certainly wears it well. Beverly thanks Mr Hill. After a long pause, Picard suggests that maybe they should be returning to the Enterprise. Beverley reminds him that they are already on the Enterprise. Picard says yes of course they are. Beverly asks him if they have time to see his office. Picard mumbles a yes and as they head off, Whalen asks the Captain if they can join in. Data says, me too boss as he loves to take a gander. Picard and Crusher shakes their head.

Picard opens the doors to his office and tells his companions that the Holodeck makes excellent use of finite space. When Picard and the others enter his office, the man seen earlier waits for them and says that Mr Hill has been avoiding him. Whalen recognizes the man as Felix Leech and Mr Leech asks him if he knows him, confused. Whalen tells him that he's read a lot about him. Picard pats Mr Leech on his shoulder and tells him that he's terribly sorry but they must be going and he'll have to call again tomorrow.

Picard and the others start heading for his office, as Leech follows them and says that Hill is being quite rude as he hasn't even introduced him to his charming companions yet. Picard says that'll have to wait. Leech reaches into his pocket and pulls out his gun, and tells Hill that he has business, urgent business to discuss. Picard and the others put their hands up, as Leech tells Picard that he's not going anywhere and smiles, not until they a little chat.

Outside the Holodeck, Geordi, Wesley Crusher and an Engineer continue to fix the Holodeck. Tasha contacts the Holodeck and Riker answers. She informs the Commander that they're approaching the Jarandan sector. Riker wonders if they had any contact from the Jaradan's. Tasha says not yet and Riker suggests that the Jaradan's maybe testing them, seeing if they'll stick with the arrangments. Tasha asks the Commander what do they do now. Riker tells her that they wait. Geordi informs Riker that everything checks out with the Holodeck and that Ensign Crusher believes the problem may have been caused by the Jaradan probe. If so, it can be very difficult to isolate.

Back in Hill's office, Leech tells Hill that he's not a man to be toyed with. Leech tells Hill that he was hired to locate a certain object and wonders what he has done with it. Picard and the others put their hands back down as Picard head back to his chair and says they'll stay a few moments longer. He sits down in his chair and tells Leech that the game is over and he can't help him. Leech tells Hill that he assures him that this is not a game. Whalen chimes in and tells Leech that he'll never find the object. He tells Leech to hand him the gun.

Leech instead fires and Whalen falls back from the impact of the bullet. Dr Crusher claps, thinking that it's a part of Whalen's Holodeck performance, not knowing that the Holodeck has malfunctioned. When Whalen shows his hands covered in blood, Dr Crusher's mood suddenly becomes serious as they rush to his aid. Whalen says, "But they're not real," and collapses.

------

Back in Hill's office, Picard, Data and Beverly huddle over Whalen's injured body. As Crusher works on Whalen, she tells them that there's massive internal injuries and that if they don't get him to Sickbay, he will die. Picard wonders how could this happen and Leech, still aiming his gun at the group, says that it will happen again if they don't co-operate. An angry Picard knocks Leech's hands and punches him in the face. A surprised Leech says that Hill struck him and how dare he. Leech heads for the exit and as he does, he says that Hill is going to regret this as Redblock won't be happy.

Dr Crusher urgently tells them that she is losing Whalen's pulse. Picard orders the computer for the exit, but nothing happens. When nothing happens, Picard tries again but gets the same response. Picard orders Data to try the other exit in the hall. When Data goes to the hall, he tells the computer to identify exit. Once again, nothing happens. Data returns to the Captain and tells him that the Holodeck has malfunctioned and is refusing to accept voice commands. Crusher urgently tells them that she is loosing Whalen's pulse and if they don't get him to Sickbay, he will die. An urgent Picard tells the computer that he is the Captain and orders the computer to identify exit. Nothing happens.

The Enterprise arrives at the Jaradan's homeworld... On the Bridge, Commander Riker has returned and orders Lt Worf to assume a standard orbit. As Worf complies, he resumes his seat from Tasha, who returns to her station. Riker contacts the Holodeck again, but Geordi tells him that they've got nothing yet. Riker reminds Geordi that they are running out of time and that the Jarada will expect the Captain's greeting soon. An exasperated Geordi tells the Commander that he may have to stall them.

Back in the Holodeck, Captain Picard and Lt Commander Data continue to search for the exit. Dr Crusher tells them that it's no use and that it's just not there anymore. Picard asks Data for an explanation. Data tells the Captain that he's at a loss. They are in a holographic created building of 1941. The computer refuses to accept voice commands, so therefore the controls to the environment are not accessible. As Dr Crusher is tending to Whalen, she tells them that she could use some light. Data sees a lamp post and begins to take it toward Crusher and Whalen. As Data drags the lamp post, the power cord that it was plugged into the socket breaks loose, causing the light to go out, confusing Data. Picard soon takes the cord and looks for another socket to plug into. When Picard plugs in the cord, the light comes on, making Data smile.

As Crusher and the others care for Whalen, the door to Hill's office opens and three men come in, including Mr Leech. There is a big man and a skinny man. The big man introduces himself as Cyrus Redblock and hopes that Mr Hill doesn't mind if he drops in. Picard says that it looks like he has no choice. Redblock reminds Hill that life is an endless stream of choices, but unfortunately he has made his life a lot more difficult. Redblock wonders if Hill would be foolish enough to hide the item here. Picard says no he's not foolish. As he does, Picard slowly goes to his desk and presses a button underneath his desk. Redblock asks Hill if he doesn't mind if he look around. Dr Crusher wishes that Redblock would stop asking that as he's going to do it anyway. Redblock reminds Crusher that good manners are never a waste of time and tells his gentlemen that civility is always a long way to go.

As Redblock sees Whalen's dying body, he tells one of his men to remove his body. Dr Crusher tells Redblock that he's not dead, but Redblock says that judging by his pallor, he soon will be. His thug asks him if they should dump his body around the corner, but Redblock says that the room next door will be fine. The thug approaches Whalen's body, but Picard intervenes and tells the thug not to touch him. Redblock looks at Leech and asks him which one struck him. Leech tells Redblock that it was Hill and Redblock nods his approval for Leech to strike him back. Leech approaches Picard and with the butt of his gun, strikes Picard in the mouth, causing it to bleed. Data tries to defend Picard, but Picard stops him. Redblock reminds Picard that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction; a Newtonian truism which Picard have neglected.

Suddenly, the door to Hill's secretary office open and Hill's new partner McNary enters, carrying a bottle of Scotch. Redblock's thug goes to the door to ambush McNary and when McNary reaches Hill's office, he asks Hill if he's in here. When McNary enters Hill's office, Redblock's thug aims his gun at McNary. Picard is helpless to stop McNary. The thug takes McNary's Scotch and gun. McNary sees the others and tells Hill that he saw his light and thought that he was working late; he guessed that he was right. McNary says that Hill is keeping a nice company and wonders if he forgot to take out the trash this morning. The thug suddenly strikes McNary in the stomach with his gun.

Redblock tells everyone that he's a tolerant man, but he does not tolerate disrespect. Data steps in and tells Redblock that his devotion to etiquette is admirable, but his methods leave much to be desired. When Redblock sees Data he says, what do we have here. Leech tells him that Data looks like a ghost. Redblock asks Leech where does he think he's from. Leech asks Data where was he hatched and as Data begins to tell him that he was created on a planet, Picard interrupts him. Data says, "South America," in a reference to his earlier conversation with a vendor. Redblock says that he's been all over the world and never seen anything like this before.

Picard interrupts and tells Redblock that none of them are from this world. He says that they are from a world of fabulous riches. He says that they are from a world where there are objects far greater than the ones they seek. Leech tells Hill that that's ridiculous. He's a private dick and he didn't even mention any of this when they met. McNary says that Leech is right. He wouldn't even buy that line of guff. Picard declares that he's not Dixon Hill. He just looks like Dixon Hill. Data steps in and tells them that Picard is right. From their point-of-view, Picard's Dixon Hill is only a facsimilie, a knock-off, a cheap imitation. Picard says, "thank you Mr Data," to which Data apologizes to him and says that is not the way how he intended it to come out.

Redblock tells them, very very good. He's impressed at their entertaining fiction. He also admires their skill at trying to obfuscate their sense of reality. Data tells Redblock that it is he who is not real. Crusher tells Data not to antagonize Redblock. Ignoring Crusher, Data tells Redblock that it is he who is an imaginary character derived from a work of fiction. McNary tells them to give it up, as these guys are too smart to fall for that kind of stuff. Data tells McNary that he's not real either. Mr Leech tells Data that he doesn't want to hear any more of this, as he is making him crazy. He asks Mr Redblock if he can kill them, one by one.

Redblock says what an interesting situation they are in. He says that perhaps they should test their theory, by killing one of them. Dr Crusher reminds Redblock that he's already done that as Whalen is dying, it's all so senseless to her. Redblock tells her that senseless killing is immoral, but killing for a purpose can often be ingenious. Leech says well said and wonders what is their purpose. Redblock reminds Leech that they are on a quest for knowledge. He demands the item from Picard. When Picard says that he doesn't have it, Leech asks Redblock if he should kill him. Redblock tells Leech to kill the woman instead and soon Leech has his gun trained on Crusher. Crusher reacts with fright, as Leech cocks his gun...

------

With the gun pointed at Dr Crusher's head, Picard tells Redblock that he has the item. Redblock throws down his hat and says, "At last. I knew it." He tells Hill that he's quite a character, waiting until the last moment. Testing his resolve. He asks him where is the item. Picard tells Redblock that he'll explain everything, but first he must tell Leech to back off. Redblock orders Leech to put the gun down, but Leech tells Redblock that he so much want to kill Dr Crusher. Redblock says maybe later as it won't harm them to listen to Hill. From the entrance, McNary shouts to Hill not to make any deals with that slime. The thug once again punches McNary, but this this time in the face, which forces McNary to a nearby chair.

Redblock tells Hill to begin and to make his thoughts fruitful and his words eloquent. He reminds Hill that his lovely lady friend's life depends on it. Picard faces Redblock and tells him that there is a price. Redblock is amazed by Hill's defiance and says that he is a man of his stripe. He tells Hill to name the price. Picard tells Redblock that he must help save Mr Whalen's life.

Back on the Bridge, Commander Riker paces impatiently. Counselor Troi tells him that they can't delay much longer. Riker says they must tell the Jaradan's something. Riker orders Lt Yar to open hailing frequencies. When Yar complies, he tells the Jaradan's that they demand a face to face... Suddenly, the Enterprise is bombarded with a high-pitched frequency from the Jarada, causing everyone to go deaf, except Worf. Riker orders Yar to cut that off. Riker tells Troi that they're not going to be satisfied with anyone but the Captain.

Soon, Geordi La Forge contacts the Bridge and tells Riker that he may have something. He'll let Ensign Crusher explain. Wesley begins by saying that the bi-converter interface has been affected and Riker cuts him off by saying forget about the explanation and asks him if it can be done. Wesley says he doesn't know. He says that if this isn't done correctly, everyone in the program could vanish. Riker asks Wesley if he needs more time to study it. Wesley tells the Commander whether they do it now or later, the risk is the same. Riker orders Wesley to do it. Wesley begins fiddling with the Holodeck controls.

Back in the Holodeck, Hill tells Redblock that if they can get Whalen into their Sickbay by fixing their computer. Redblock says that he doesn't understand this word, "computer." Data explains that a computer is an electronic or mechanical apparatus capable of carrying out repetitious or complex mathematical operations at high speed. Data says that computers are used to control, perform, process and store... Leech interrupts him and says that he's heard enough. He says that Data is starting to irritate him and asks Redblock if he can kill him. Outside the Holodeck, Wesley Crusher continues to fiddle with the computer controls for the Holodeck...

Inside, Wesley Crusher has caused the program to change from an office setting to an ice planet setting. After the program returns to normal, the Holodeck doors reappear and Dr Crusher alerts the Captain. Picard goes to the exit and tells Redblock that this is the way to their world. Redblock says remarkable and asks Picard if this is a two way passage and if one can enter their world and return to this one. Picard says yes, and tells him that if they let them help Whalen, they'll be back with the item. Redblock tells Hill that he really is a scamp. He wonders if Hill expects them to wait in the Holodeck while they return, he was wrong. Data reminds Redblock that if he's going to go through himself, it is not possible. Redblock says that one look at Data suggests that anything's possible.

Redblock orders Hill to step aside. He'd shoot him himself, but he wouldn't want to deprive his assistant of his greatest pleasure. Redblock tells his thug that after they're gone, he wants him to dump their bodies so that they're never found. McNary says that Redblock is insane. He wonders that if he can get away with killing a cop. Redblock says why not, as he's done it before. He orders Leech to follow him. As Leech moves forward, Redblock says "Au revoir, et bon chance, mon ami," to Dixon Hill as their destiny awaits.

Redblock and Leech leaves the Holodeck and enters the Enterprise corridors. As they do, Redblock says they've got a whole new world to plunder. Soon, Leech realizes that something is wrong, as he can't move his legs. Redblock looks down and sees that his legs are disappearing as well, and proclaims that they can't do this to him. He wonders if they don't know who he is and the two soon vanish, as Redblock shouts that he's Cyrus Redblock...

After Redblock and Leech vanishes, Data goes to the their thug, grabs his gun and squeezes the muzzel shut and drops it to the floor. After he does, he grabs the thug by the tie and asks the Captain his permission. Picard gives him permission and soon, Data punches the thug to the ground. After dealing with the thug, Picard orders Data to take Whalen to Sickbay. Data wonders, what about him. Picard says that he'll follow and urges Data to go. Data picks up Whalen and both he and Dr Crusher exit the Holodeck.

After Data and Crusher leaves, Picard grabs his coat and goes to McNary. Picard tells McNary that he wish he could take him as well. McNary somberly tells Picard that someone has to book this creep. He says that once a cop, always a cop. Picard says that he has to go and McNary says that this is the "Big Good-bye." Picard and McNary shakes hand and before Picard can leave, McNary asks him something. He asks Dix that if Hill leaves, will this world still exist. Will his wife and kids still be waiting for him at home. Picard answers, he honestly don't know. Picard says good-bye one more time and then exits the Holodeck, making the world go black...

Picard steps onto the Bridge and Commander Riker asks the Captain if he's ready, as he throws down his coat and hat onto his chair. Picard says that he'll be ready as he'll ever be. He order Lt Yar to open hailing frequencies. Soon, Data steps onto the Bridge after taking Whalen to Sickbay. Picard greets the Jaradan and soon begins their greeting, with Counselor Troi encouraging him from her seat. After delivering the greeting, the Jaradan voice tells them that they have honored them with their words of greeting. She says a new day dawns between them. The Bridge crew applauds the Captain, as he and Data takes their seat. As the Captain sits down, Riker asks him how was the vacation. Picard says that it was a nice place to visit, but he wouldn't want to die there.

At Conn and Ops, Geordi asks Data how was it in there. Data says that it was raining in the city by the bay that day. A hard rain. The kind of rain that could wash the slime away... Before it can get out of hand, Picard interrupts Data and Data apologizes, as Troi laughs. Picard orders Geordi to take them out of orbit and for him to step on it. Soon, the Enterprise warps to their next destination...
