TWO DIMENSIONAL THINKING

With the battle raging on, a fully recovered Chekov comes onto the Bridge, and asks the Admiral for a duty. The Admiral orders the Commander to man the weapons station, and relieved, Chekov staggers over to the tactical station, still suffering from side-effects of the torture that Khan inflicted. Kirk soon goes to Spock for advise and Spock has been scanning his instrument, non stop. Spock reports that there is a sporadic energy reading from the Reliant, port side out. He suggests it might be an impulse leak from the Reliant, which would suggest that Khan is about to give up. Kirk reminds the Vulcan that Khan followed him this far and will stop at nothing to make sure that Kirk is dead. Spock soon notes that Khan is inexperienced and his pattern indicates a two-dimensional thinking. Happy, Kirk soon makes the move, by ordering the helmsman to drop Z-plus 10,000 degrees. He orders Chekov to ready the photon-torpedoes.

A SNEAK ATTACK

Khan watches the static filled viewscreen with curiosity. He wonders what Kirk is upto. Soon, the Enterprise sneaks up behind the unsuspecting Reliant. On the Bridge, Chekov reports that the photon-torpedoes are ready, as he pulls out a joystick from the weapons console. The Enterprise maneuvers to line up with the Reliant for a better shot. On the Bridge, Kirk tells everyone to look sharp. Soon, a vague image of the Reliant appears on screen, as Kirk orders, "Fire!" The blinded Khan does not have time to respond, as the Enterprise's torpedoes inflict heavy damage on the Reliant, including slicing off one of Reliant's warp nacelle's. Spewing plasma, the Reliant is dead in space.

THE GAME'S NOT OVER

On the Bridge of the Enterprise, Kirk is elated as victory is within grasp. Kirk orders Uhura to patch in a hailing frequency. Uhura begins her incessant rant to order Khan to surrender his ship and to prepare to be boarded. On board the crippled Reliant, Khan's bloodied hands grips the helm station, and soon he hurls himself up to look at the victorious Enterprise. Khan's face is bloodied from the recent attack by the Enterprise. He soon realizes what he must do, as he staggers over to the Genesis device on the Bridge. Before he activates the machine, Khan mutters toward the viewscreen, "Young Kirk, the game's not over." He then begins activating the machine. Before he finishes the last touch, he mutters, "To the last, I will grapple with thee." He then completes activating the machine. The Genesis Device indicates commit, and it soon sputters to life, as does the Genesis torpedo in the Reliant's Transporter Room.

THE GENESIS WAVE

On the Bridge of the Enterprise, Spock soon notes a pattern unrecognizable to him, and alerts the Admiral. The Admiral and his son go to the science station, and David instantly recognizes the pattern. "It's the Genesis Devise. It's on a build up for detonation." The Admiral asks his son, how soon. His son answers that they encoded four-minutes for detonation. When Kirk suggests that they beam over to the Reliant to stop, David stops him, saying that it can't be stop. Kirk quickly reacts, as he presses a com button on the science station. He orders Scotty that they need warp engines in three minutes or they're all dead. There is no response. Soon, Spock realizes that he is the only who can save them, as he heads for Engineering, passing Kirk who doesn't notice his absence. Kirk orders Sulu to get them out of there, at best possible speed.

REMEMBER

Spock rushes to Engineering, as the Genesis torpedo on the Reliant goes haywire, as it readies itself for detonation. Upon reaching Engineering, Spock checks a console, before he decides to enter a radiative filled chamber. Seeing this, Dr. McCoy stops Spock, informing him, "No humans can tolerate the radiation that's in there." Spock soon points out that he is not human, as the Doctor is fond of pointing out often. McCoy continues to protest, and Spock must relent. He soon asks the Doctor how is Mr. Scott's condition, a perfect opportunity to get away. McCoy informs him that he is fine, just a little knocked out, and when he turns his back on Spock, Spock manages to give him the Vulcan neck-pinch, knocking McCoy unconscious. He then puts his hand on his face and mutters, "Remember," planting his conscious inside McCoy. He then grabs the unconscious Scotty's glove, and enters the chamber. When Scotty sees this, he immediately gets up and informs Spock to get out of there.

WE'RE NOT GOING TO MAKE IT

On the Bridge, Kirk asks for his time, and Saavik notes that they have two-minutes ten seconds left. Kirk shouts to the commlink, "Scotty, what's going on?" In Engineering, Spock continues to work in the radiation filled chamber. McCoy awakes from Spock's nerve-pinch and shouts to Spock to get out of there. Scotty also pleads. The Enterprise slowly limps out of range of the crippled Reliant. Spock continues to repair the warp engines. On the Bridge, Kirk asks for his time. Saavik announces that they have three-minutes twenty seconds left. Kirk asks Chekov the distance from the Reliant, and Chekov answers that they are four-thousand kilometers from the Reliant. Sulu notes that they're not going to make it, and Kirk looks at David for confirmation. He simply gives a grim nod. On board the Reliant, a weak Khan watches as the Enterprise limps slowly away. He is stunned, "No, you can't get away. From hell's hot, I stab at thee. For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee." The Genesis torpedo is erratic now. In the Engine Room of the Enterprise, Spock is successful at repairing the engines, as he puts the cover on the reactor core. On the Bridge, an officer monitoring the Engineering station informs Kirk that the mains are online. Kirk mutters, "Scotty. Go Sulu!"

A NEW PLANET BORN

As the Enterprise jumps into warp, the Reliant explodes in a fiery display, taking away the static filled nebula with it. As the Enterprise streaks away, the effect of the Genesis wave begins to take shape. From a safe distance, the Enterprise crew, along with the Genesis creators, Dr. David Marcus and Dr. Carol Marcus, who joins them on the Bridge, watch a planet being born. Kirk is astounded, as he announces to Carol, "My God, Carol, look at it." Carol is enthralled, as she joins David, her son. Kirk soon hits his communicator, to congratulate Scotty. Instead of Scotty, the weak voice of McCoy's filter through. "Jim, I think you better get down here. Better hurry." Kirk is oblivious to McCoy's request, and when he looks over at the science station, to find his Vulcan officer absent, he then realizes McCoy's plea. He leaps from his chair and orders Saavik to take the Command.

LIVE LONG AND PROSPER

Kirk rushes to Engineering, as the formation of the Genesis planet continues. When he reaches Engineering, he finds Spock's radioactive body inside the warp chamber. Kirk tries to open the chamber, only to be stopped by Scotty and McCoy, who warns him that he'll flood the chamber. Kirk tells them that he'll die, but McCoy notes that he's already dead. Saddened, Kirk relents and walks up to the chamber. "Spock!" shouts Kirk. Spock's radioactive body staggers over to the door. He bumps into the door, as he is blinded from the radiation. "The ship out of danger?" asks Spock. Kirk notes that it is. Spock then informs the Admiral not to grieve, as it is logical. Kirk soon understands his logic by quoting it for him, "The needs of the many, outweighs the needs of the few."" Spock completes it for him. Spock then notes that he never took the Kobayashi Maru test until now. He wants to know what the Admiral thinks of his solution. Kirk can't take any more of this, as he holds back his tears. Spock's final words are, "I have been, and always shall be, your friend." He then takes off his gloves and gives the Admiral one last Vulcan salute, as he states, "Live long, and prosper." Spock then dies, and the Admiral overcome by emotion, mutters, "No."

SPOCK'S FUNERAL

Later, in the torpedo bay, a torpedo tube comes down, draped in the Federation blanket. The whole crew is there, keeping at attention. When it touches down, Sulu removes the blanket and the Admiral begins the funeral. He is trying hard to hold down the tears. "We are gathered here to pay final respects to our honored dead." He soon notes that this death takes place in the shadow of a new world, a world where his comrade gave his life to protect. He informs the crew that he sacrificed his life, over others. He then finishes his eulogy by saying, "Of all the souls I have encountered in my traverse, his was the most human." He then breaks down in tears, as does others. Scotty then announces, "Honors, hut." Spock's casket is loaded into the torpedo tube, as Scotty plays a bagpipe version of Amazing Grace. When the tube's casing closes, Spock's casket is fired out of the torpedo tube toward the Genesis planet.

I'M PROUD TO BE YOUR SON

As the Enterprise slowly breaks orbit of the Genesis planet, Kirk tries to read Spock's last gift, "A Tale of Two Cities." When he puts on his glasses, he realizes that its cracked. He is soon interrupted by a visit by David, who wants a word with him. Kirk tries to get out of his conversation, by noting that he should be on the Bridge, and by offering David a drink. Not wanting this to slip away, David informs him how Kirk never faced death before. Kirk concurs. He's never faced death, at least not like this. He then tells his son that he cheated, and took his way out of death. David also mentions how Kirk told Saavik that it was important on how he lived his life, as how he died. Kirk mentions that they're just words, and David encourages his father that that's where ideas begin, by good words. David then stands and prepare to exit. Kirk asks his son, if that's what he came here for. "Mainly," David announces. He turns around to face his father and informs, "Also that I'm proud, very proud to be your son." Kirk is estatic. He gets up, moves over toward his son, and embrace the young man. David also embraces his father, as the two men forgive each other.

I FEEL YOUNG

Kirk returns to the Bridge to make a final log entry.
Captain's Log: Stardate 8141.2. Starship Enterprise departing for Ceti Alpha V to pick up the crew of the Reliant. All as well. And yet, I can't keep remembering about the friend I'd leave behind. There are always possibilities, Spock said. And if Genesis is indeed life from death, then I must return to this place again.
Kirk enters the Bridge and heads toward the viewscreen, where McCoy and Carol are watching with awe at the new formed planet. McCoy notes that Spock isn't really dead, as long as they remember him. Kirk then informs the crew that its a far better thing that he's done, a better resting place then he's known. Carol soon understands Kirk's dilemma by asking him, "It's that far." Kirk then informs her that Spock was trying to tell him something on his birthday. McCoy understands as well, and asks the Admiral how he feels. The Admiral answers, "I feel young."

SPACE, THE FINAL FRONTIER

As the Enterprise pulls away, we enter the Genesis planet for one last time, and realize that Spock's casket has touched down on this newly formed planet. We move up into the sky, and follow the Enterprise's point-of-view as Spock's last record plays.
Space, the Final Frontier. These are the continuing voyages of the Starship Enterprise. It's continuing mission to explore strange new worlds and new civilizations. To boldly go, where no man has gone... before."
The Enterprise warps away toward home.
